The Town of St. Marys is switching from OPP to Stratford Police for protection, after municipal officials and residents voiced concerns about current policing coverage.
St. Marys Mayor Al Strathdee says the OPP policing contract is too expensive for what locals believe is a minimal police presence in the community.
He says that -- in effect -- the Town subsidizes other Perth communities under the OPP contract.
Strathdee notes that St. Marys will save $250,000 a year with the switch.
Starting January 1st 2018, Stratford Police will provide one dedicated officer to the town, and a total of five new officers will be hired during the remainder of this year.
