The United Way Perth-Huron is highlighting the 211 information and referral telephone system during Emergency Preparedness Week.
Director of Communications and Community Relations, Susan Faber says 211 covers a wide range of concerns callers may have, from weather-related emergencies to social service referrals.
She points out that 211 is different from the 911 system, which is for emergencies that are dealt with by police, fire departments and paramedic services.
Faber says during extreme weather, 211 provides information including road conditions, where cooling or warming stations might be located, power outages and water supplies.
She mentions that 211 is available on-line but recommends using the phone service for help, because there is always a live responder who can help with any questions or concerns you have.
211 operates across North America and is staffed by personnel 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
All calls are confidential.
If English is not your first language, 211 can help in over 170 languages.
