Three Huron County bridges have been formally renamed in honour of the local detachment’s fallen Ontario Provincial Police officers.
A ceremony on Thursday at the Columbus Centre in Goderich drew family members of the late constables, and dignitaries from OPP headquarters in Orillia and throughout the southwest region.
The Force’s Kevin Hummel handled the paperwork to get the bridges renamed.
He tells Bayshore Broadcasting News the Province of Ontario created the option to dedicate bridges to the honour of individuals in 2008.
Hummel says he believes it is fitting that the structures on the Bluewater Veterans’ Highway carry the names of the Huron County heroes.
The Bayfield River Bridge at Bayfield now bears the name of Constable Dave Mounsey.
The Menesetung Bridge just north of Goderich has been dedicated to the memory of Constable Bruce Crew, while Constable Vu Pham’s name now graces the Nine Mile Bridge.
The three Huron officers paid the ultimate sacrifice while on duty over a period from September, 1983 to March of 2010.
Hummel says the accolade is in addition to an August 2012 tribute initiated by the County that renamed a portion of Huron County Road 12 as the Highway of the Fallen.
