It’s another shocking drinking static for Huron and Perth Counties.
As Bayshore Broadcasting News told you in September a recent Canadian Community Health Survey shows nearly 1 in 5 Perth County residents age 12 and over is a heavy drinker.
Now, the Huron County Health Unit is reporting the same results.
Senior Public Health Promoter at the Huron County Health Unit Angela Willert notes heavy drinking is defined as consuming 5 or more alcoholic drinks at one sitting, once a month or more.
Willert says the figure is higher compared to what they would like but it is in line with the province.
She adds the survey is based on everyone 12 years and older – and does not necessary means 12 year olds in the region are heavy drinkers.
Willert tells Bayshore Broadcasting News according to the Canadas low-risk alcohol drinking guidelines it recommends women consume no more than 10 drinks a week and no more than two drinks a day.
It also recommends men consume no more than 15 drinks a week and no more than three drinks a day.
Willert adds drinking can lead to serious risks include alcohol poisoning, violence and injuries such as car crashes.
Alcohol can also increase risky sexual behaviour, poor or regrettable decisions, and problems with finances, work or school.
