Goderich Place Retirement Community has officially opened their new wing.
The Harmony Memory Care wing will provide up to 12 area residents with facilities for those living with Alzheimers disease and dementia.
Owner of Goderich Place and Founder of Retirement Life Communities Josef Ger says it will be an assisted living area.
Ger adds the wing has been completely designed so it is safe for those living with memory issues.
He adds within the population at the retirement home they have witnessed residence form either Alzheimer’s or dementia.
Ger adds those people are also experiencing the anxiety that comes along with it.
He says the new wing is non-threatening and well understood by patients as it is private.
The wing will also allow staff to engage each resident in individualized therapy with pets, art, yoga, and drum circles.
The wing officially opened Thursday with a ribbon cutting by Goderich Mayor Kevin Morrison and MP Ben Lobb along with other officials from Goderich Place and Retirement Living Communities.
Ger adds they already have three people living in the wing and expect more to be moving in within the next few weeks.
The opening also featured a cheque presentation to “Project Lifesaver”.
HMC General Manager Gail MacTavish says “Project Lifesaver” is a joint effort between Victim Services and the Alzheimer Society.
MacTavish adds the money will go towards a tracking system for people living in Huron County with Alzheimer’s or Dementia or Autism who wonder.
She adds Goderich Place has donated the start up cost for the project.
