Registration is now open to ride golf carts on Huron-Kinloss area roads as part of a pilot project.
The township says in June 2020, the Ministry of Transportation introduced a new pilot project for golf carts to see if these vehicles, over a 10-year period, could be safe enough to integrate them with other vehicle types and determine if existing rules of the road are adequate.
Later in August 2021, the township passed a by-law regulating the use of golf cars in the area.
People who are interested in participating will need to be registered with the township and have a current registration and validation sticker, which comes with a $50 price tag.
The golf carts can be driven on roads posted at 50 kilometres an hour and under the jurisdiction of the township. Participants are not permitted to drive on any county roads or any shared boundary roads like Saratoga Road, and the Ashfield/Huron boundary.
The pilot is not limited to Huron-Kinloss residents, as anyone can register to participate and bring their golf carts into the township.
Additionally, passengers must be at least eight-years-old, and there can only be one passenger per seat, while using seatbelts if they are installed.
This pilot period runs from April 1 to Nov. 30 and is enforced by South Bruce OPP and the township.
Registration can be completed by visiting the municipal website here.
