Goderich Town Council has approved a budget for 2024.
During a special budget meeting on Monday afternoon, staff presented council with several viable options for the operating and capital expenses for this fiscal year.
Council chose an option that would result in a 5.91% tax increase.
“I was a little surprised by the numbers and how this came about,” says Mayor Trevor Bazinet. “I crossed my fingers and hoped we could get in between that 5.5 and 6 (percent)…I’ve seen what other municipalities have passed for their budget.”
Bazinet continued, saying that he was hoping to not have to increase taxes by more than one percent more that 2023’s increase, but wasn’t sure it was possible.
They also chose to have the Huckins Street rent revenue be redirected to the infrastructure reserve fund.
The new budget is expected to be officially adopted at council’s regular meeting on April 8th.
