As summer approaches, Huron OPP are promoting bike safety in the region.
Local police have partnered with the Town of Goderich, Miller Group, and Canadian Tire Goderich for a Bike Safety Event on June 6th.
Constable Craig Soldan says bike safety starts with wearing a helmet.
“We do fall off our bike, and one of things that does hit the ground is your head,” Soldan says.
“Make sure your kids have a properly fitted, safe helmet.”
Soldan says bike safety also lies with motorists, adding the more notable injuries involving cyclists occurred on Huron County roadways.
He tells Country 104.9 News drivers should give cyclists space.
“By law, they have to be one metre away from the cyclist when they are over-taking them,” Soldan says.
“Keep an eye out for kids especially. We do try to talk to kids about stopping at stop signs.”
The “Bike Safety Day” runs Saturday June 6th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the parking lot of Canadian Tire Goderich, with pre-registration necessary by June 4th for kids ages 5-10.
Officials say there will be an obstacle course, and skills young cyclists can use for years.
